The Road to California – Day 0

(Written at the time)

I’ve gotten so good at recognizing quality synthetic fabrics that I don’t look anymore. I sweep my hand across the rack at Goodwill, slowing down only once I’ve struck pay dirt and need to check for size.

I’ve also read more blog entries and Amazon product reviews in the last month than most people will read in a lifetime. This includes a 45 minute comparison of three different brands of quick dry towel.

What I’m trying to say is that preparing for a year-long trip is not as simple or as straightforward as I thought it would be.

Silk vs. poly STILL gets me. :( Did you get the nice vent things on your backpack so you can still wear it in the tropics without creating your own marine ecosystem on your back?

Lol… so my bag is a combination between light weight and load carrying. It has both foam and mesh so it should keep me somewhat cool, but there are better options. The Osprey Atmos line of bags has like a mesh chamber design where your back rests against the mesh but behind that is a large pocket which funnels cold air in and hot air out. I liked the bag, but it wasn’t a comfortable fit. I went with the REI Crestrail 48.

The only silk thing I’ve seen is sleeping bag liners, which are pretty expensive for something so itty bitty… But I haven’t seen any silk clothing options. Maybe that’s a lady thing?

      Great hearing from you!!

Silk button downs (and dresses) are probably a little too fem, but anything where silk is what’s right up against your skin is super nice. Although I will warn you that dry skin on your hands can make it all snaggy. :(
